Commonwealth Games Canada seeks candidates for international sport placements

OTTAWA, September 16, 2013 – Commonwealth Games Canada is looking for ten young Canadians who are passionate about sport to be part of its sixth team of Canadian SportWORKS Officers (CSOs) to go abroad under the innovative Capacity Support Program (CSP).

The CSP is a joint initiative of the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Canada, with funding support from Olympic Solidarity.  The program aims to build the organisational capacity of Commonwealth Games Associations and National Olympic Committees through 11-month placements of CSOs.  CSOs strengthen their host organisations in a variety of functional areas, including games team preparations, marketing and communications, office procedures and sport development.

The focus of the Program in 2014 is on the African region.  There will be a strong emphasis on Games Team Planning, as African host countries have as many as four major Games to prepare teams for (Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympics, African Youth Games and Zone IV Games).  The host organisations for CSP 6 are:

  • Botswana National Olympic Committee
  • Lesotho National Olympic Committee
  • Mozambique National Olympic Committee
  • Namibia National Olympic Committee
  • Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association
  • South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee
  • Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association
  • Uganda Olympic Committee
  • National Olympic Committee of Zambia
  • Zimbabwe Olympic Committee

“The CSP program has provided more professional and personal growth than I could have possibly imagined,” says current CSO Aimee Maggiacomo from Anguilla.  “The diversity of projects that I have been fortunate to work on, from website development to financial management and beyond, have exposed me to a wide variety of areas within sport management. My understanding of the sport system as a whole has significantly increased by working in this industry in a foreign country. The CSP program has provided me with an invaluable experience and has laid the foundation for a future career in sport.”

CSP placements are open to Canadians who have studied Sport Management, Sport Administration, Health, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics or Recreation at the postsecondary level. The CSO appointments are volunteer positions, but successful candidates will receive a financial package sufficient to cover all their costs, from pre-departure orientation to a debriefing upon their return to Canada.  CSP Team 6 CSOs will be brought to Ottawa for a pre-departure training session from December 16th-18th.  CSOs will depart for their host countries in early January, 2014 with their placement concluding in December of 2014.
