Canada Wins Two Bronze Medals at Judo

On day two on the Judo mats in Glasgow, after four Canadians competing managed to make bronze medal finals, in the end it was Alix Renaud-Roy and Jonah Burt who came away with some hardware.

In the early session, St-Roch-des-Aulnaies Quebec’s own Alix Renaud-Roy (70kg) defeated Fabiola Ndanga Nana of Cameroon and moved to the semi-finals. In the semis, Renaud-Roy met Megan Fletcher of England but was defeated and headed to the repechage for the chance to live on.  Against Sara Collins of Australia in the repechage, Renaud-Roy rallied and won to advance to the bronze medal match. In the match for bronze, Renaud-Roy met Catherine Arscott of Australia but was strong and won the gold.

“My bronze medal match went well and according to our plan. I am very proud of what I have accomplished here today and of taking this bronze medal home to Canada,” said Renaud-Roy.   

In the 81kg weight-class, Jonah Burt from Whitby Ontario began the day by defeating Craig Ewers of Wales in the preliminary round of 32 to advance to the round of 16. Still in the preliminaries, Burt beat Pavlinic of New Zealand to advance to the quarter finals. In the quarter finals Burt met Louis Messi of Cameroon and won again eying the opportunity to head to the semi-finals. In the semis, Burt lost to Owen Livesey of England and was forced to fight in the bronze medal final. Robert Nicola of Cypress was Jonah’s opponent in the fight for bronze, but it was the Canadian who won the match looking strong and confident.

“Having a bronze medal from the Commonwealth Games is very special,” said Burt. “I realize it’s a rare thing.”

Other judo competitors for Canada on day two included Louis Krieber-Gagnon (81kg)who met Boas Munyonga from Zambia in the bronze medal final but was defeated,  Beatrice Valois-Fortier of Beauport, QC who was defeated by KJ Yeats-Brown of England finishing fifth and Monika Burgess (70kg) of Kitchener, ON who did not advance out of the preliminaries.
