Two silver, three Canadian records at World Cup
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands August, 08, 2013 – Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., and Chantal van Landeghem of Winnipeg each won a silver medal and broke a Canadian short course record on Wednesday to open the first stop on the FINA World Cup swimming circuit.
It was a great start to the short course season for Canada with Hilary Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., also setting a national mark.
In the women’s 100-m butterfly, Jeannette Ottesen Gray of Denmark won the gold medal in 55.97 seconds and Savard followed in 56.49. That eclipsed the previous national mark of 56.64 set by Noemie Thomas of Vancouver this past December at the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships.
Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge was also in the final and placed seventh in 57.91.
In the women’s 50-m freestyle, Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands broke the world record clocking 23.24. Van Landeghem followed in 23.85 which bettered the Canadian record of 24.19 set by Victoria Poon of Montreal in 2010.
Sandrine Mainville of Montreal also reached the final placing eighth.
Caldwell, a bronze medallist at the recently completed FINA World Championships, took fourth spot in the women’s 200-m breaststroke in 2:02.56 which was also a Canadian record. Katy Murdoch of Calgary held the previous mark at 2:03.31 since 2009.
Other Canadian women’s results: van Landeghem was also fifth in the 50-m backstroke and Martha McCabe of Toronto seventh in the 100-m breaststroke.
On the men’s side, Zack Chetrat of Oakville, Ont., was seventh in the 200-m butterfly and Alec Page of Victoria and Russell Wood of Calgary were both eighth in the 400-m individual medley and 100-m backstroke.
Canada had two teams in the 4x50 mixed medley relay. Wood, McCabe, Coleman Allen of Vancouver and van Landeghem were fourth and Caldwell, Ashton Baumann of Ottawa, Savard and Chris Manning of Brantford, Ont., were fifth.
